Description
British Prime Minister Harold MacMillan is seated on President Kennedy's knee. Dressed as Santa Claus, Kennedy holds a sling shot in his right hand and a sack of missiles to the right of his rocking chair.
MacMillan was keen to do something to avoid the impending nuclear war and in the crisis talks with Kennedy he suggested the idea of immobilising the 60 Thor nuclear missiles in the UK (deployed under dual UK–US control), in exchange for the demobolisation of missiles in Cuba. This idea was not popular with Kennedy and he instead proposed a deal with Krushchev to end the crisis with the withdrawal of the missiles and Kennedy’s assurances not to invade Cuba and the U.S. agreed to remove the missiles from Turkey and Italy.
