not titled [Soldier in helmet]
Description
Three quarter length portrait of a soldier in black charcoal. He is wearing full battle dress and holding a rifle in his right hand and a bayonet in his left. This is evidence of Rix Nicholas’s confident draughtsmanship during this period. Her models were returned servicemen and the kit is an early issue battle dress which was provided to the artist by the Department of Defence.
Purchased with assistance from the Australian Government’s National Cultural Heritage Account, 2015.
