...and we talk about sacrifice, Invest in the 4th Liberty Loan
Australian Fourth Liberty Loan poster which appropriated an American poster design by R. Couillard. The original American text stated 'Buy War Bonds,' while the text on the Australian poster was changed to 'Invest in the 4th Liberty Loan.' The image of an elderly woman positioned in front of a ruined building is the same on both posters. By depicting her wearing a head scarf and standing in front of war damaged buildings, Couillard has powerfully evoked the suffering and destruction of the war in Europe.
The Fourth Liberty Loan with the slogan '"Back the Attack!" was launched by Prime Minister John Curtin on the night of the 4th October 1943 in the Sydney Town Hall. The target of the loan was one hundred and twenty five million pounds and 750,000 subscribers. It closed on 9 November 1943.
