Description
A member of the 1st Mounted Rifles (Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry) with the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigade of Anzac Mounted Division, washing his clothes in the desert using a canvas water bag preparatory to revisiting Gallipoli. The cap badge worn is two fern leaves containing the letters 'CYC', the motto Pro Focis et Patria and the date 1864, the whole surmounted by a ram's head. The formation sign belongs to the Canterbury Mounted Rifle Regiment comprising 1st (CYC), 9th (South Canterbury), 10th (Nelson and Marlborough) Mounted Rifle Regiments. In late 1918, members of the Australian Light Horse were chosen for a tour of the old battlefields of Gallipoli. The group, predominantly made up of Gallipoli veterans, disembarked on the peninsula on 4 December 1918.
