Description

The Russian cruiser Askold, nicknamed the 'Packet of Woodbines' on account of the appearance of her five funnels (and possibly also because of the amount of smoke they belched), seen from HMT Ascot in Mudros Harbour on the Greek Island of Lemnos. Lemnos was lent by Greece as a base for the Allied fleet. It was also chosen as the base for troops landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula; however, due to the limited fresh water supplies and lack of wharves at Mudros harbour, Alexandria became the main base instead.
