Description
A town on the west coast of the Greek island of Lemnos near Turkey, now the capital and also known as Kastro after the Venetian fort (castro or castle) on the hill in the background. The island was lent by Greece as a base for the Allied fleet. It was also chosen as the base for troops landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula; however, due to the limited fresh water supplies and lack of wharves at Mudros harbour, Alexandria became the main base instead.
