Description

Mudros Harbour on the Greek island of Lemnos, with Australian camps in the foreground. The island was lent by Greece as a base for the Allied fleet. It was also chosen as the base for troops landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula; however, due to the limited fresh water supplies and lack of wharves at Mudros harbour, Alexandria became the main base instead. Nevertheless, Mudros occupied an important place in the line of communication throughout the Gallipoli campaign, and the harbour was always crowded with transports and battleships.
