Two officers standing beside an anti aircraft gun at the top of a valley near Shrapnel Gully on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The Hotchkiss QF 12 pounder 12 hundredweight Mk I gun is mounted on a carriage garrison mount. One of the officers is believed to be Lieutenant (Lt) Terence Ward Garling, of Longueville, NSW. Prior to his enlistment in the AIF on 20 August 1914, he served with the 44th Battery, Australian Field Artillery. Second Lt Garling embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Argyllshire on 18 October 1914 and was the officer in charge of the only anti-aircraft gun on Gallipoli. He was promoted to Lieutenant in June. He later served with the 10th Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) as a major. Major Garling died of wounds at Millencourt, France, on 5 April 1918 aged 24.
