Description
The Royal Navy armoured cruiser HMS Hampshire and the troopship HMAT Orvieto in the Gulf of Aden. HMS Hampshire joined the first Australian convoy as an escort, and the convoy flagship, on 13 November 1914, and remained with it until arrival at Suez. In June 1916 HMS Hampshire was torpedoed and sank in the North Sea while carrying Field Marshal Lord Kitchener, Chief of the British General Staff. An Orient liner, HMAT Orvieto was requisitioned for use as an Australian transport and was the flagship of the first Australian convoy.
