When the Germans commenced unrestricted submarine warfare, every effort was made to increase food production in Great Britain. Soldiers and civilians alike, were asked to cultivate vegetable allotments. Australian soldiers are here seen breaking up a plot of ground set apart for this purpose in their camp. 6859 Private John William Thrupp Widdup (second from left) and party are sowing and ploughing in seed potatoes at No. 4 Command Depot, Hurdcott. Pte Widdup, 7th Battalion, was recovering in England from a gunshot wound to the chest and shoulder.
