Description
Studio portrait of two soldiers. On the right is 2462 Private (Pte) James William Bilham, 5th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, of Tatyong via Benalla, Vic, and on the left is 2249 Pte Donnies Henry Read, 4th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion, of Melbourne, Vic (originally of Norwich, England). Pte Bilham enlisted on 26 June 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Osterley on 29 September 1915. He was killed in action on 26 May 1916 near Mouquet Farm, France. His cousin, 5474 Pte James Robert Wakefield, 8th Battalion, was also killed in action on 4 October 1917. Pte Read enlisted on 13 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata on 27 September 1915. He returned to Australia on 23 September 1918. See also DA10714.
