A Gyppo village January 12, 1915
Sketchbook containing 56 pages of drawings from his service during the First World War
- Scrapbook leaf with two pencil sketches recto and an ink sketch verso
Description
Depicts a landscape and an Egyptian village, including adobe brick houses and palm trees in the middle distance, and a figure riding a donkey in the foreground. While the word 'gyppos' has been used as an abbreviation of 'gypsies' and 'Egyptians', the reference in the title is likely to be to an Egyptian village as the adobe housing depicted is not suggestive of the nomadic lifestyle of gypsies.
