The graves of Able Seaman John Courtney, Royal Australian Naval Reserve and Lieutenant Commander ...
Description
The graves of Able Seaman John Courtney, Royal Australian Naval Reserve and Lieutenant Commander Charles B Elwell, Royal Navy. Both men were killed in action at Kabakaul on 11 September 1914. These two sailors were originally buried at Kabakaul and in 1919 transferred to the Rabaul military cemetery. On 11 September 1914 a party landed at Kabakaul and successfully raided the wireless station at Bita Paka; this was the first fight in which Australian Naval forces ever took part.
