Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Studio portrait of 1131 Private (Pte) Douglas Grant. Originally from Manchester, England, Pte Grant was a farmer from Trafalgar, Victoria prior to enlistment and embarked with the 8th Reinforcements, 29th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Ascanius on 10 November 1915. On 25 October 1916, aged 23, he was killed in action and was buried in the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France. His brother 341 Pte James Reginald Grant served with the 31st Battalion and lost an eye in action. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. See also DA10886 & DASEY2430.
