Description
Studio portrait of 3022 Private (Pte) Robert John Crawford, 10th Reinforcements, 9th Battalion. Pte Crawford enlisted on 24 June 1915, and embarked for service overseas aboard HMAT Warilda (A69) from Brisbane, Qld, on 5 October 1915. After serving on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Pte Crawford was transferred to the 49th Battalion and deployed to France. He served at Mouquet Farm and Pozieres, where he was mentioned in despatches for 'his excellent work as a stretcher-bearer August 13th-16th 1916, under heavy fire.' Pte Crawford was later wounded by enemy fire in an incident that left the rear stretcher bearer dead, and was invalided back to Australia on 27 September 1917.
