Description
The French Navy battleship Massena and and the French passenger ship Saghalien run ashore to form a breakwater at V Beach in the Cape Helles area. The ship had been towed from Toulon and scuttled next to the transport ship River Clyde, on 9 November 1915, to form part of an artificial harbour. Taken from HMS Tumult, torpedo boat destroyer, half a mile off shore looking north. One of a series of photographs taken on the Gallipoli Peninsula under the direction of Captain C E W Bean of the Australian Historical Mission, during the months of February and March, 1919. This is the left hand image in a two part panorama. See G01854P for the combined image.
