Description

Studio portrait of Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Sir Samuel Augustus Pethebridge KCMG wearing the colour patch of the Tropical Force and the George V Coronation Medal , Australian Naval and Military Expedition Force (AN&MEF). Brig Gen Pethebridge was serving as the Administrator of German New Guinea when he enlisted with the rank of Colonel in the 3rd Battalion Naval and Military Expedition Force and embarked from Sydney on SS Eastern on 28 November 1914. He had previously served in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve and was appointed to the post of Australian Commissioner for the Pacific Islands. After returning to Australia he died at his residence on 25 January 1918 and was buried with full military honours in the Box Hill General Cemetery, Victoria.
