Studio portrait of Major Granville James Stuart Down of St Kilda, Victoria. After enlisting January 1915, Down served on Gallipoli with the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. His pre-war employment as a clerk came to the attention of Major Edwin Leane of the Australian Army Ordnance Corps (AAOC) and he was transferred to the 2nd Division Headquarters as Major Lean’s personal clerk. He saw service attached to the Deputy Assistant Director of Ordnance Services (DADOS), was commissioned in July 1916, and after a rapid promotion to Captain was awarded the Military Cross in September 1917. Down was transferred to DADOS in England and was promoted to Major in July 1918, and after the war, spent time in Repatriation and Demobilisation (R&D) Depot in Egypt. He returned to Australia sometime in late 1919 and died in 1970 aged 87.
