Description

A Royal Air Force (RAF) reconnaissance photograph of Tromso Fiord, showing the capsized hull of the 45,000 ton German battleship Tirpitz, after an attack on 12 November 1944, by Lancaster bombers of Nos 9 and 617 Squadrons, RAF. Using 12,000 pound armour piercing, Tallboy bombs, she capsized and sank with the loss of 1,204 lives. Note the attending small craft and the many holes in the hull, cut out to rescue trapped crew members.
