A Fairey Firefly aircraft No 234 of the RAN returning from St Kilda Island, west of Hebrides, United Kingdom (UK). The Firefly is an anti submarine and ground support aircraft. The observer is normally a naval officer or petty officer. The pilot is Lieutenant (Later Commodore) John Douglas Goble, RAN and the observer is 3206 (VX101918) Major (Later Lieutenant Colonel) Gordon Hall Hardcastle, Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC). The photograph was taken during the "work up" of the newly commissioned aircraft from Australia's first aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney in UK waters early in 1949.
