Barbed wire entanglements : Wire Gully, Gallipoli
Two sections of German barbed wire wrapped around pieces of wood. The larger piece, measuring, 35.5cm length x 15.5cm width x 17.6cm depth, is made from two lengths of wire twisted together wrapped around a roughly finished piece of wood shaped like a small cricket bat or oar. The wider end has black burn marks.
The smaller piece, measuring 36.8cm length x 12.8cm width x 10.9cm depth, carries square profile wire that has been twisted on itself and wrapped around a broken piece of wood. The barbs on this piece are longer than those on the larger piece.
These barbed wire entanglements were collected on 17 February 1919 at Wire Gully by members of the Australian Historical Mission to Gallipoli. Wire Gully is the steep valley between Mac Laurin's Hill and Johnston's Jolly. The area was named for the barbed wire that later filled the valley to prevent a Turkish attack.
