Description
The Heliopolis Palace Hotel on the outskirts of Cairo. The enormous building housed the 1st Australian General Hospital (1 AGH), which opened to receive cases on 25 January 1915. A former oasis, Helipolis was being developed as a fashionable suburb and recreation centre, and thus was well served with roads, electricity, water and sanitation. In anticipation of large numbers of casualties from the Gallipoli Peninsula, 1 AGH and 2 AGH were both expanded to 1000 beds by the acquisition of additional buildings.
