Souvenir of Egypt embroidery : Mrs H Crawford
Souvenir embroidery on blue cotton sateen, machine chain-stitched in a variety of coloured cottons, and edged with gold lace. It reads: 'Souvenir of Egypt 1916 From Bert to Mrs H. Crawford With best Respects'. Decorative images of the Pyramids, flowers and the flags of Russia, Great Britain, Australia and France are also present.
Souvenir embroidery sent as a wedding present to Mr Herbert Crawford and his wife Annie, by Herbert's cousin Bert, who was serving with the AIF in the Middle East. 'Cousin Bert', whose christian name is thought to have been Robert, and surname Crawford, McIntyre, Napier or McArthur, came from the Western Districts of Victoria, and probably served with a Light Horse unit in Palestine and Sinai. He is known to have survived the war, and having returned with a 'love of hot weather and hard drink' spent the remainder of his life in Queensland.
