Awarded to 2131 Corporal Charles Oakley Erwood who served in 11 Battalion, AIF during the First World War. Erwood was born in Victoria in 1881 and was a contractor until his enlistment on 23 January 1915. He embarked for overseas service aboard the troopship A2 'Geelong' on 6 June 1915 and served on Gallipoli. Later that month he was wounded in action and was eventually transferred to England to the 3rd London General Hospital. In the same month he reverted to the rank of Private from Corporal at his own request. There is a gap in Erwood's military records for the period 10 November, 1915 to 11 February, 1917. However, the information available suggests he remained in England during this time. In September 1917 he returned to 11 Battalion, in France, with the rank of corporal. In June 1918 he was admitted to a hospital in Havre with influenza where he remained for the next month. He rejoined his unit in July but was wounded a second time in August, and died from his wounds on 11 August 1918. He is buried in France at Daours Communal Cemetery Extension.
