Studio portrait probably of 3071 Private (Pte) Claude Dewsnap, 24th Battalion, of Brighton, Vic. Pte Dewsnap enlisted aged 22 on 7 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Commonwealth on 26 November 1915. He died of wounds on 28 October 1917 in Lijssenthoek, Belgium. His three older brothers also enlisted in the AIF. The eldest, 3027 Pte John William Dewsnap, 59th Battalion, was killed in action on 29 July 1916 in France aged 37 years, and has no known grave. The second eldest, 4493 Lance Corporal George Peter Dewsnap, 2nd Field Company Engineers, was awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 17 December 1917 and survived the war. The third, 21738 Joseph Henry Dewsnap, enlisted in July 1917, and served with the Australian Army Medical Corps. He returned to Australia in July 1919.
