Dickinson, Vincent Robert (Lieutenant, b.1894 - d.1962)
Collection of Lieutenant (Lt) Vincent R Dickinson of 7 Battalion. It consists of five diaries written by Dickinson October, 1914-January 1919, an illustrated typescript of the diaries, a photocopy of a photograph of Dickinson and his brothers in uniform and a damaged pip from Dickinson's uniform. Dickinson writes briefly of his journey SS Hororata, including being seasick, seeing HMAS Melbourne and visiting Colombo. Detailed entries relate Dickinson's experiences while based at Mena Camp, Cairo, as Orderly Room Sergeant. Although not on the Front he provides information on Gallipoli, including the action of Lone Pine and the death and funeral of Major General W T Bridges. He also comments on the difficulty of gaining promotion or commission while working at Battalion Headquarters. From April 1916 Dickinson writes briefly of training attended in England action he was involved in around Amiens. He notes his appointment as Battalion Intelligence Officer on 20 January 1917.
