Reverse painted glass surmounting a studio portrait of 2319 Private Joseph Edward Hughes, 4th Reinforcements, 36th Battalion of Hamilton, NSW, who enlisted on 12 July 1916. He died on 12 October 1917 and has no known grave; his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium. The glass has been painted in green, black and gold with Art Nouveau style forms around the portrait. A small portrait of King George V appears above a narrow box on the left side with the words 'For King' and a corresponding portrait of Lord Kitchener above the words 'For Country' on the right. The bottom of the frame contains a photograph of the transport ship HMAT Borda, the ship on which he sailed for service overseas, leaving on 17 October 1916 from Sydney.
