Description

Group portrait of four prisoners of war (POWs) from Zentsuji Camp which was located at Shikoku, Osaka, Japan. Identified from left to right: VX51161 Lieutenant (Lt) Arthur William Page, 2/1st Independent Company from Prahran, Victoria; NX70590 Captain Ronald Alexander McDonald, Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC), Dentist from Eastwood, NSW; VX129332 Lt William Henry Larkin, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) from Kew, Victoria; and NGX459 Major Norman Bennington Watch, RAAMC, New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR) from Rabaul, New Guinea. Most of the men in the camp were Allied officers captured in the early battles of 1942. The camp was a 'show camp' used by the Japanese for propaganda purposes, but after 1942 conditions worsened.
