Description

Group portrait of prisoners of war (POWs) from Zentsuji Camp at Shikoku, Osaka, Japan. Identified from left to right: VX48548 Lieutenant (Lt) Eric Richard Meade Almond from Drumcondra, Victoria; VX46451 Lt Gordon John Bussell from Warburton, Victoria; VX44356 Lt Robert Alan Edney from Mildura, Victoria; VX24728 Lt James Robert Badham from Malvern East, Victoria; and VX15946 Lt James Hugh Bowring from Mordialloc, Victoria. Most of the men in the camp were Allied officers captured in the early battles of 1942. The camp was a 'show camp' used by the Japanese for propaganda purposes, but after 1942 conditions worsened. These prisoners of war all served with the 2/22nd Battalion and were captured at Rabaul, New Britain.
