Description

Group portrait of prisoners of war (POWs) from Zentsuji Camp at Shikoku, Osaka, Japan. Identified from left to right: SX11406 Lieutenant (Lt) Kenneth Rogers Robertson, Coastal Artillery, Royal Australian Artillery (RAA) from Fort Largo, South Australia; SX11407 Captain Stewart Gordon Nottage, Coastal Artillery, RAA from Woodville, South Australia; TX6041 Major James Rowland Purcell Clark, Coastal Artillery, RAA from Hobart, Tasmania; TX6042 Lt Stanley Hilton Cooper, Coast Artillery, RAA from Hobart; and TX6043 Lt Albert Arthur Chandler, Fortress Engineers, Royal Australian Engineers from Fort Pierson, Tasmania. Most of the men in the camp were Allied officers captured in the early battles of 1942. The camp was a 'show camp' used by the Japanese for propaganda purposes, but after 1942 conditions worsened. These five POWs were captured at Rabaul, New Britain.
