Group portrait of prisoners of war (POWs) from Zentsuji Camp at Shikoku, Osaka, Japan. Identified from left to right: VX39159 Lieutenant (Lt) Jack Lusby Burns, 2/1st Independent Company (2/1st Ind Coy) from East Malvern, Victoria; VX44549 Captain (Capt) Albert Edward Goode, 2/1st Ind Coy from Deniliquin, NSW; VX43617 Major Leslie Hunter Lannan, 2/22nd Battalion (2/22nd Bn) from Windsor, Victoria; and VX45855 Capt John Thornbury McCallum, 2/22nd Bn from Colac, Victoria. Most of the men in the camp were Allied officers captured in the early battles of 1942. The camp was a 'show camp' used by the Japanese for propaganda purposes, but after 1942 conditions worsened. Maj Lannan and Capt McCallum were captured in Rabaul, New Britain, and Lt Burns and Capt Goode were captured in Kavieng, New Ireland.
