D-Day and the Battle for Europe
On June 6th, 1944, the Allies invaded Normandy. The cassette begins with reports made aboard ships steaming toward Normandy on the eve of D-day. One reporter describes what it was like to parachute into France on the night before D-day. Others describe the action that took place on the beaches. In one of the actualities, the church bells of Paris ring to announce the liberation of the city. The cassette includes an eyewitness account of German snipers firing at DeGaulle in Notre Dame Cathedral, reports of the Falaise Action, and a discussion by Montgomery of the reasons for the failure of his "bold plan" to capture Arnhem. The cassette also covers activities on the eastern front including the relief of Leningrad after four years of siege. It concludes with the Allies poised and ready to crush "Fortress Germany" from east and west.
