Description

Group portrait of prisoners of war (POWs) from Zentsuji Camp at Shikoku, Osaka, Japan. Identified from left to right: QX64899 Lieutenant (Lt) Douglas Richard Haas, Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC) from Brisbane, Queensland; Q90832 Lt Cyril Claude Victor Nielsen, RAAOC from Ashgrove Queensland; QX6470 Captain (Capt) Alexander Fraser, 2/1st Independent Company from Ingham, Queensland; and NGX457 Lt Claude Geoffrey Kilner, New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR) from Melbourne, Victoria. Most of the men in the camp were Allied officers captured in the early battles of 1942. The camp was a 'show camp' used by the Japanese for propaganda purposes, but after 1942 conditions worsened. Lts Haas, Neilsen and Kilner were captured in Rabaul, New Britain, and Capt Fraser was captured in Kavieng, New Ireland.
