The sergeants' mess at the 1st Australian Division Headquarters in Mena Camp, on Christmas Day 1914. Identified from left to right: 5 Staff Sergeant (SSgt) John Linton Treloar; Warrant Officer (WO) John William Donnelly; SSgt George Thomas Reeder; 51 Sergeant (Sgt) Ronald Arthur Fordyce; SSgt Shepherd; Sgt R Diamond; SSgt Patrick Eugene Coleman; WO Harry Edmund Butler; Sgt Harry Leslie Downe; SSgt John Balfour; SSgt Herbert Louis Ferns. The men are seated at a long table set with flowers, bottles of wine and ginger ale. SSgt Treloar later served in the Gallipoli campaign, and in 1917, as a captain, he was appointed to head the newly created Australian War Records Section (AWRS) in London. Treloar played a vital role in collecting records and relics for the future Australian War Memorial museum, and had influence over every aspect of its development. He was appointed Director of the Memorial in 1920, and remained in this position for the rest of his life. (See also C03455)
