A group of warrant and non-commissioned officers attached to the 1st Australian Division Headquarters, outside an Egyptian temple at Saqqara, Egypt. All but three of the men subsequently gained commissions. Identified, from left to right (standing): 3501 Regimental Quartermaster-Sergeant (RQMS) John Arthur Kyte; 5 Staff Sergeant (SSgt) John Linton Treloar; SSgt George Thomas Reeder; the temple guardian; SSgt Arthur William Ross; RQMS John Francis Donnelly; Warrant Officer (WO) John William Donnelly. (Seated): SSgt Patrick Eugene Coleman; Sgt Ronald Arthur Fordyce; Sgt Harry Leslie Downe; Sgt Frank Shaw; an interpreter attached to 1st Australian Division HQ; WO Harry Edmund Butler. SSgt Treloar later served in the Gallipoli campaign, and in 1917, as a captain, he was appointed to head the newly created Australian War Records Section (AWRS) in London. Treloar played a vital role in collecting records and relics for the future Australian War Memorial museum, and had influence over every aspect of its development. He was appointed Director of the Memorial in 1920, and remained in this position for the rest of his life.
