Tonkin, Ernest William 'Tony' (Squadron Leader, b.1921 - d.1999)
Description
Collection relating to the Second World War service of Squadron Leader Ernest William 'Tony' Tonkin, No. 453 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, 1945. Collection consists of a 23 page detailed letter from Tonkin to a friend Mary Moxley Symons in 1945 describing details of assistance by the Dutch Resistance after crashing in German occupied Holland in 1944. Also included is a photograph of Mary Moxley Symons with Tonkin, taken in Montreal Canada during his training in 1943.
Tonkin went onto serve in the Korean War and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in September 1953. He discharged from the RAAF in 1977 as an air commodore.
