Siegmund Lewinsohn
Description
Portrait of Tatura Camp internee, Siegmund Lewinsohn. The Camp and its buildings, including the watch tower, can be seen in the distance. Lewinsohn was a fellow-internee of the artist at the Tatura Internment Camp 2, in Victoria in 1942. Born in Dautzig, Germany, Lewinsohn had come to Australia on the MHT Dunera in 1940 as one of the European refugees sent from London to Australia. He was interned at Hay in Victoria and then at Tatura. After government intervention, when it was learned that the men were not Fascists or Nazis, Lewinsohn was permitted to join the Australian Forces. He enlisted in the Australian Army in the Employment Company (V503913) on 16 November 1942 at Royal Park, Victoria.
