Description
Studio portrait of 6718 Private (Pte) William Henry Bain MM, 3rd Battalion, of Sydney, NSW. A labourer in civilian life, Pte Bain enlisted on 1 August 1916, and embarked for service on the Western Front aboard SS Port Nicholson on 8 November 1916. Pte Bain was awarded the Military Medal for 'conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty' during a heavy barrage at Mont de Merris near Strazeele, France, on 14 April 1918. Despite being subjected to machine gun fire and direct enemy observation, Pte Bain passed through the barrage to warn the front line posts of a flank attack, thus keeping in commmunication with his Company posts. He returned to Australia on 31 March 1919.
