The gateway to the battlefield of Ypres through Chateau Wood, in the Ypres Salient. An unidentified soldier takes cover behind one of the shell damaged tree trunks on the roadside. This is a composite image, the print made by combining two or more negatives to make an altered image. The unaltered original image, which does not show the shell burst on the road, is held at E01237.
