Informal portrait of 1099 Private (Pte) William Gregory Brennan, F Company, 3rd Battalion, of Montefores via Wellington, NSW. Pte Brennan went to school at St Patricks Convent School at Wellington and then worked as a postal assistant for some time before enlisting on 17 August 1914. He embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914 and later took part in operations in the landing at Gallipoli Peninsula. Brennan was wounded in the fighting in July 1915 and later died of these wounds at sea on 24 July 1916. He was 22 years of age at the time of his death and his name appears on the Lone Pine Memorial at Lone Pine, Gallipoli Peninsula. It was reported by the Wellington Times that Brennan was the first 'Wellington native' to die on Gallipoli Peninsula.
