Description
Captain C Mills, 31st Battalion, the first Australian to reach Berlin after the armistice. Captain Mills went to Berlin as a Red Cross representative to search German records for details of missing Australian soldiers. The statue behind him is the wooden effigy of Hindenburg, into which the Germans drove nails of homage. The Victory Column (Siegessäule) was constructed to celebrate the military successes of Prussia over Denmark. The statue of the victory goddess Viktoria stands on top of the Victory Column.
