Description

Australian infantry soldiers and a European civilian assist with the treatment of a seriously injured Rwandan civilian immediately after the massacre of civilians by the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA) at the United Nations administered Kibeho Refugee Camp. The soldiers are part of the Infantry Element protecting the Australian Casualty Collecting Post (CCP) at the camp. The brutal massacre of unarmed Rwandans in the camp resulted in so many casualties the medical staff were overwhelmed and the infantry soldiers not only acted as stretcher bearers but also provided direct assistance to injured civilians. The Australians are all members of the second Australian Service Contingent (ASC2) serving in the second United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR II).
