Hector John Heron was born in Hobart, Tasmania in either 1923 or 1925. During the Second World War he served initially with the militia, with the service number T25778, enlisting in the Supply Column of the Australian Army Service Corps in Tasmania on 7 January 1942. He was discharged on 18 June 1942 and re-enlisted in the Second AIF, as a private with the service number TX9085, in May 1943. He saw service in New Guinea and remained in the army after the end of the war, transferring to 66 Infantry Battalion and service in Japan with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. During this period he was assigned the service number 6/1244. Heron was discharged in June 1947.
