Description

French propaganda poster published by the Conference au Village Contre la Propagande Ennemie en France in December 1917. It features a depiction of the expansion of the Prussian military. An octopus wearing a pickelhaube helmet represents the Prussian military. Superimposed over a map of Europe it engulfs the continent with its tentacles reaching into Asia Minor and is a striking visual metaphor for the increasing threat Prussia represents. In the upper right corner are caricatures of three German soldiers increasing in size to represent the growth of the Prussian Army in 1715, 1815 and 1914. The poster states that since 1788 war has been the National Industry of Prussia. The following quote from a speech by General Petain in June 1917 is positioned across the bottom beneath the map: 'Attaques, Nous ne faisens que nous defendre au nom de la Liberte et pour sauver notre existence' [The French have to attack for liberty and their very existence].
