Description
Crew of corvette HMAS Wallaroo, with ship in the background, its identification confirmed by its distinctive camouflage scheme. Identified in the centre in the second row is Lieutenant Eric Sinclair Ross (Royal Australian Naval Reserve (Seagoing)) the ship’s captain. Originally of Palmerston North, New Zealand, Lieutenant Ross enlisted on 21 October 1940. On 15 July 1942, he was given command of HMAS Wallaroo. Wallaroo had a very short and uneventful life. She met her end on 11 June 1943 when she sank as the result of a collision with the United States Liberty Ship Henry Gilbert Costin. Ross was injured in the collision.
