History / Summary

This anti-dimming outfit is associated with the service of 424539 Donald James Tomlinson. He was born in Narrabri, New South Wales on 17 June 1910 and enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force on 12 September 1942. Tomlinson served as an instructor in the Empire Air Training Scheme in Canada, where he was involved in training navigators before they served in the United Kingdom. He was discharged from 3 Air Observer School on 20 August 1945 with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Anti-dimming outfits were used to prevent condensation in respirator eyepieces. The compound was applied to the inside of the eyepiece and caused the moisture to form a clear film which did not interfere with vision.
