Description
Studio portrait of 71 Private (Pte) William Edward John Castles, Headquarters, 31st Battalion, of Atherton, Qld. Pte Castles enlisted on 28 May 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard either HMAT Bakara on 5 November 1915 or HMAT Wandilla on 9 November 1915. He was killed in action on 19 July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles, France. Note the bandsman cap badge.
