British War Medal 1914-20. Impressed around edge with recipient's details. With original paper packet of issue labelled 'BRITISH WAR MEDAL Issued to The Mercantile Marine', together with instructions for wear.
History / Summary
Born in 1888, Stanley Charles Percival Avery was a Merchant Navy seaman who served on a passenger liner converted for wartime use as a hospital ship during the First World War. After the war he settled in Australia in 1922, where he married. He died in 1947. Avery's younger brother, Harold, was killed in Belgium in 1917 while serving in the British Army, with the Queen's (West Surrey) Regiment.
