Solomon Islands sweetheart brooch : Corporal T A Lupton
A perspex double-heart brooch with an aluminium disk engraved with 'Solomon Islands' and a beach scene with palm trees. On the back of the badge is a brooch pin fastening and a safety chain, also with a pin fastening.
Sweetheart brooch brought back to Australia by NX194671 Corporal Thomas Albert Lupton. Born in Bankstown, NSW on 7 September 1919, Lupton enlisted in the AIF on 1 April 1941. He was discharged from 11 Field Ambulance on 5 December 1945. This brooch is a typical example of hand produced sweetheart jewellery made during the Second World War from whatever spare material was available. Often worn by female relatives and/or a girlfriend or wife, the brooches were a symbol of pride, support and affection for a loved one serving in the armed forces.
