Description

Aerial view of part of Heligoland Island in the North Sea, which was subjected to a massive air raid by nearly 1,000 British medium and heavy bombers on 18 April 1945. The population of the island took refuge in underground bunkers but almost everything above ground was destroyed. This image was taken from a Lancaster bomber, flying at low altitude (approx 800 feet). The Lancaster was piloted by 430033 Flight Lieutenant Alexander Elliott (Alex) Jenkins, RAAF, who was flying a group of senior British RAF Officers on an inspection tour of bomb damaged areas of Germany at the end of the European conflict.
